Q. 「関係」を意味する英語に、relation と relationship という言葉がありますが、どういう場合にrelation を使い、どういう場合に relationship を使うかについて教えてください。

 

A. それらの言葉の理論的意味より、それらの言葉と組み合わせて使われる連語　(collocation) とそれらの言葉を含んでいる用例を調べてみると、その違いがわかり易くなります。 

 

 

Relation…間の関係: [連語]  the relation between cause and effect 因果関係;
the relation of parents to children　親子の関係;

 

[用例] The size of a diplomatic mission and the grandeur of its premises seem to bear little relation to the size or wealth of the country concerned.
 外交使節団の大きさとその建物の豪華さは、その国の大きさや経済規模とは関係がほとんどないにように思われる。

 

 

 

Relations  (複数形) (国民・国家間の関係、人との関係): [連語] business relations取引関係; 東西関係: employer-employee relations 雇用者と被雇用者の関係; international relations 国際関係; industrial relations (labor relations) 労使関係; foreign (or diplomatic) relations 外交関係; human relations 人間関係; trade relations 通商関係; amicable (or friendly) relations 友好関係;

 

 

 

[用例]  He is trying to maintain friendly relations between the two countries.
 彼は 2国間の友好関係を維持しようと努力している。

 Relations between the White House and the Republican Congress have been strained by differences over increases in the minimum wage.
(アメリカの) 大統領府と共和党が優勢な議会との関係は、最低賃金の引き上げに関する意見の違いで悪化した。

 

 

 Bankers, regardless of business relations, were asked to lend money to the near-bankrupt credit union without the benefit of collateral.
 銀行はその倒産しかかった信用組合と取引があるなしに関係なく、無担保で資金を貸すように要請されている。

 

 

 

Relationship 関連・関係: [連語]  personal relationship 人間関係;

 

[用例] What is happening to those prices in the Big Apple bears a strong relationship to price movements in the rest of the nation.
　ニューヨーク市における物価の変動とアメリカのその他の地域における物価の動向との間には密接な関係がある。

 

 

　We enjoy a close business relationship with that American company.
 当社はそのアメリカの会社と緊密な取引関係を持っている。

 

    Relationships (複数) (折り合い・関係) [連語] family relationships 親戚関係;
 close relationships 親密な関係;  

 

 

[用例]  Japanese firms form long-term, close relationships with their suppliers.　日本の企業はその下請け企業と長期的で密接な関係を結んでいる。
 Japan has good relationships with most countries in the world.
 日本は世界のほとんどの国と友好関係がある。
 While Western manufacturing giants put contracts out to competitive tender, Japanese ones nurture long-lasting relationships with small firms.
 西欧の大手製造会社は競争入札によって外注に出しているのに対し, 日本のメーカーは中小企業との長年の関係を大事にしている。　

 

 

 

　これらの連語および用例から次のような結論を引き出すことができます。

 

 

(1)  あることとあることとの関係 ― 例えば、原因と結果the relation between cause and effectまたは親と子供の関係 the relation of parents to children ― を言い表す場合には、relation を使い、

(2) 同じ関係でも短期的に変わりやすい関係 ― 例えば、取引関係　business relations、外交関係　foreign (or diplomatic) relations、労使関係　industrial relations (labor relations) －を言い表す場合には　relations とrelation の複数形を使い、 

(3) 長期的にあまり変わらない関係 ― 例えば、人間関係personal relationship －を表す場合には、relationship を使っています。

(4) 親戚関係 (family relationships), 師弟関係 (teacher-student relationships) のように、複数の単体間の関係をいうばあいには、relationships と複数形で使います。
